Pro Tip Tuesday: Removing Deep Stains

Pro Tip Tuesday: Removing Deep Stains

23rd Sep 2025

It’s Dan, back with another Pro Tip Tuesday from Carbon Method!

Deep stains in cast iron are difficult to remove – and in some cases, the only way to remove them is by taking the cast iron top to a machine shop to have it ground or resurfaced, an expensive and time-consuming process.

Instead of going through all of that, try Carbon Method Reconditioning Oil – included in the Carbon Coating Prep Kit. It'll dig deeper, lifting some of the worst stains – and it'll do it much faster than a traditional lubricant.

So if you have deep stains that are tough to get out, try soaking those stains with Reconditioning Oil, giving it 30 to 60 minutes to really penetrate, and then hitting the stain with a maroon Abrasive Pad (also included in the Prep Kit!) by hand. This focused spot removal can cause uneven scratches, so make sure to follow up with a maroon pad attached to a random orbital sander to even out the surface.

Reconditioning Oil can only go so far and some stains are too deep to be completely removed, but before you drag that top to a machine shop, give Reconditioning Oil a try!

If your stains are a pain, Reconditioning Oil is the name of the game!
