Pro Tip Tuesdays: Tables and Desks

14th Apr 2025

It’s Dan, back with another Pro Tip Tuesday from Carbon Method!

Let’s talk about coating both sides of a table or a desk. Using Carbon Method Ceramic Nanofinish on both the top and the bottom is always the best choice, but if you are trying to speed things up and use less materials you can get away with coating just the top.

Nanofinish will change the amount of humidity and air exchange that a piece will experience. By creating a true seal it does result in less wood movement.

It really just depends on the design:

  • In a design where the top is structural in nature, like a slab with steel legs, I would highly recommend using Nanofinish to coat all sides. This will reduce the risk of cupping or twisting over time.
  • If the design is fully supported by an apron and rails or the equivalent, you can get away with using Nanofinish to coat just the top!

So if you want a piece to really pop, coat every surface of the top.

For more great tips on how to get the best possible results from your Nanofinish application, check out my Ceramic Nanofinish Application Guide and watch the accompanying video. In addition to the basic application information, I’ve also included the answers to questions I’ve been asked over the years – as well as all the little things I’ve learned using Nanofinish myself!
